Governor Greg Abbott has elected to have Texas participate in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit.

Governor Greg Abbott has filed Texas’s Advance Election to Participate with the IRS, making Texas one of 30 states to opt in to the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit. Beginning January 1, 2027, donors in Texas and across the country can contribute to approved scholarship-granting organizations in Texas and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal income tax credit of up to $1,700.

What This Means for Texas
  • Texas’s elementary and secondary students will have access to FSTC-funded scholarships in 2027!
  • SGOs are preparing to start collecting donations and distribute scholarships in Texas in January 2027. They await instructions about how to make sure they are on the State SGO List.
  • Schools, tutoring programs, and other education providers are preparing for the increase in demand in 2027.
